43rd Annual Conference IPS will be organized by National Executive Committee -2010 in association with "Food & Drug Toxicology Research Centre , NIN (ICMR) on 13th to 16th Dec-2010 at Hyderabad.

Bye-Laws / Rules

e) TITLE

The Fellows will be known as Fellows of the Indian Pharmacological Society and may write FIPS after their names.

f). HONORARY FELLOWS

Persons who in the opinion of the Executive Council have rendered conspicuous service to the cause of Pharmacology as evidenced by National and International Recognition and whose election may be of signed benefit to the Society may be elected Honorary Fellows.

  • The persons should be more than 50 years of age and have been actively involved in teaching and or research in pharmacology for at least 25 years.

  • The number of such Fellows will be not more than 2 in an year and the total number should not exceed 25 or 3 % of Life membership whichever is less.

  • Formal nominations will not be invited but names may be proposed by members of the Executive Committee , life members of over 15 years standing or Fellows by writing to the President of the Society with adequate justification at least 3 months before the annual general meetings.

  • The name of any honorary fellow elected during the year will be announced at the General Body Meeting.

  • The Honorary Fellow will not be required to pay the Fellowship due but will otherwise have to fulfill the obligations of Fellows and enjoy the same privileges.

  • Non – resident Indians who do not have Indian citizenship may also be considered for election as Honorary Fellows.

K. Annual Conference:- Annual conference of the Society shall ordinarily be held in December, preferably within 28th to 31st December.

L. B.N. Ghosh Memorial Fund:- An endowment the “B.N. Ghosh Memorial Fund” is created to organize suitable academic activities e.g. B.N. Ghosh Memorial Oration etc. The following will act as interim trustees to decide matters regarding the fund :

  • Prof. B. P. Mukherjee, Kolkata
  • Prof. Biswapati. Mukherjee, Kolkata
  • Prof. Mamta Bandhopadhyay, Kolkata

The fund shall be jointly operated by any two of the trustees.

As much of the fund as possible shall be kept in a long term fixed deposit in one of the nationalized banks. The rest shall be deposited in a savings bank account. Expenses incurred for the B.N. Ghosh Memorial Oration including TA/DA/medal/souvenir etc. shall be met out of the interest accrued on bank deposit.

Account of the fund shall be submitted to the treasurer of the Society every year. The executive committee of the Society shall appoint the following committee to decide the speaker for the B.N. Ghosh Memorial Oration of the next year.

  • President, Convener
  • General Secretary
  • Three members nominated by the executive committee.

M. Govind Achari Memorial Oration:- An endowment “Govind Achari Memorial Fund” has been created by Dr. (Mrs) Kamala Achari to organise the G. Achari Memorial Oration every year starting from the XXV annual conference of the Society, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamala Achari being the chairperson of the Board of Trustees. The expenses incurred for the oration including honorarium, TA/DA, medal scroll etc. shall be met out of the interest accrued on the bank deposit of the fund, amounting to Rs.40,000/-. The Speaker of the oration will be decided by a committee consisting of

  • President, IPS, Convener
  • General Secretary, IPS
  • Three expert members nominated by the executive committee.
  • Chairperson, Board of Trustees.

The Speaker nominated shall be an eminent scientist working in the field of Pharmacology and allied discipline, and the theme of the Oration will preferably be on work related to autacoids and neurotransmitters. However, the theme of the oration need not be restricted to these fields and the choice will be left to nominated Speaker.

N. Delhi Bursaries and John Autian Fund for Travel to annual Conferences:- It was decided that Delhi Bursaries/ John Autian Travel grant will be awarded every year out of the interest accrued from Rs.25,000/- and 40,000/ respectively put in the fixed deposit for this Purpose. The criteria decided for award of Delhi Bursaries/ John Autian Travel grant will be that the person should present a paper in a session for a prize and should be of young age preferably. TA/DA will be paid to him/her depending upon the funds available.

O. Endowments:- The Society shall not accept endowments below Rs. 20,000/- and these need to be deposited with the treasurer in advance, of the date of award

P. Dr.S.B.Pandey Memorial Oration: An endowment “S.B. Pandey Memorial Fund” has been created by Muzaffarpur Branch of I.P.S. to organize the S.B. Pandey Memorial Oration in the field of Pharmacology and allied discipline, every year starting from 35th Annual conference of the Society. Mrs. Asha Pandey w/o late Dr. S.B. Pandey being the Chairperson of Board of Trustees. An amount of Rs 50,000/ has been given to the corpus of the society. The S.B. Pandey Memorial Oration will be given out of the interest accrued on it

The conditions of the award shall be as follows:

The initial fund of Rs.50,000 (Fifty thousand rupees) donated by the Trustee will be deposited by the Indian Pharmacological Society for long term fixed deposit in one of the Nationalized Bank.

The interest incurred will be deposited in Savings Bank account and the expenses incurred on oration will be met from the interest money.

A committee consisting of the following shall decide the speaker of oration:

  • President, I.P.S. - Governor
  • General Secretary, I.P.S.
  • Three experts nominated by E.C.

The speaker nominated shall be an eminent scientists working in the field of Pharmacology & allied discipline.

The theme of oration need not be restricted and will be left to the choice of the nominated speaker.

The speaker will receive Silver medal, scroll & a shawl.

The Society and the Donor or his Nominee may modify the terms and conditions of the Award any time after mutual consultations

AWARDS AND PRIZES FOR THE PUBLISHED PAPERS

  • PALEPU PERINDEVI SURYAKUMARI PRIZE:

    Miss P. Suryakumari (sister of Dr. P.B. Rao Prof P.S.R.K. Haranath) who died at an early age of diabetes mellitus and its complications, left a sum of Rs. 2,000/- Mrs. Perindevi, mother of Miss Suryakumari, also died of Diabetes mellitus. Prof. P.S.R.K. Haranath has made a further donation of Rs.3,000/- in 1980 to enable the prize to be awarded annually.

    • Interest accrued on the above sum of money shall be awarded as “Palepu Perindevi Suryakumari Prize”.

    • The prize shall be awarded once in a year to an Indian author/authors for the best research work published on “Diabetes mellitus, other endocrinal and metabolic disorders” in an Indian or foreign journal.

    • If no award is made in any year the savings will be added to the original fund.

    • The Chief Editor/ General Secretary of the Society may call for a list of publications related to Diabetes mellitus and Metabolic Disorders” from all the medical colleges, research institutions and university departments of the country. It may also be notified that any scientist, medical or non-medical, may cite his other works for the award. (This bibliography may be published in the journal of the Society).

      Five copies are to be submitted to the Editor, Indian Journal of Pharmacology, before a date to be specified, at least 2 months before the Annual Conference. The Editor, who is the Convener assists three judges nominated by the IPS Executive to finalize the Best Paper for the award. The Editor may also download from the net papers in the last 5 years in these areas to identify ‘suo moto’ eligible papers for the award, since many Research workers in other areas are not aware of the Prize. The information of the Prize may also be sent to related Societies/ Journals in Diabetology, Endocrinology etc for information

    • Members of the executive committee shall suggest names for the panel of judges. Out of these suggested names the president shall constitute a panel of 5 judges including the president and the General secretary. The judges shall be medical or non-medical scientists possessing an advanced knowledge of the various aspects of diabetes mellitus and metabolic disorders. The judges shall send the marks awarded on the candidates to the convener who shall finalize the recipient of the award.

    • The terms of the award may be changed only with the concurrance of Prof P.S.R.K. Haranath during his life time, and later by the executive committee of the Society.

  • BEST PUBLISHED RESEARCH PAPER PRIZE (Jaipur prize and Nagendra - Nath Dutta Prize) :-

    Pharmacological fraternity of the S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur donated Rs. 2,000/- to award a prize (Jaipur Prize) every two years. Prof. Saradendu Dutta donated Rs. 2,000/- plus 5000/- toward a prize in the name of his father (Nagendra Nath Dutta Prize) every two years. Both these prizes will be awarded out of the bank interest accruing on the fixed deposits as per rules given below :-

    • Papers published in Indian Journal of Pharmacology in even years (1976, 1978, etc.) shall be considered for N.N. Dutta prize, and papers published in odd years (1975, 1977 etc.) shall be considered for Jaipur prize. One of the two prizes shall be awarded every year.

    • The authors of the best papers will share the prize.

    • The recipients must be Indian nationals working in an Indian laboratory.

    • The following will constitute the panel of judges for selecting the best paper.

      • President of the Society.

      • Chief editor of the Society-Convener,

      • Three members appointed by the executive committee.

  • UVNAS PRIZE:- Prof G. Achari has raised funds (Rs. 5,000/-) for the award of a prize in the name of Prof. B. Uvnas, Department of Pharmacology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, ex-president of IUPHAR and a well wisher of the Indian Pharmacological Society. Subsequently Professor Uvnas made further donations, now amounting upto Rs. 80,000 corpus money in fixed deposits with the Society. The prize will be awarded as per rules below;

    • The award shall be made every year to a member of the Society based on the best paper published in any journal on any aspect of “Autacoids and biogenic amines”. The work for the paper must have been conducted in India.

    • To adjudge the best paper, the following committee be constituted

      • President of the Society (chairman)

      • Three members nominated by the executive committee.

    • The paper must be submitted by the members to the president of the Society 3 months before the annual conference.

    • The total prize money will be Rs. 7,000/- which will include Rs. 5,000/ towards prize and Rs. 2000=00 towards registration, travel etc. This will come into effect from 1994.

  • Dr. B. MUKHERJEE PRIZE:- The Calcutta branch of the IPS has donated Rs. 5,000/- towards this prize in the name of Dr. B. Mukherjee. The prize will be awarded every three years out of the bank interest accruing fixed deposit (as per rules given below) in the annual conference of the Society (1983 onwards)

    • The prize shall be awarded to the best research paper on lndigenous drugs published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology in the preceding three years.

    • The paper shall not be eligible for any other award.

    • The authors of the paper shall share the prize. The authors shall nominate one amongst them who shall receive the prize in the conference on their behalf.

    • The recipient must be Indian national.

    • The following will constitute the panel of judges for selecting the best paper :

      • President of the Society.

      • Chief editor of the journal (convener)

      • Two members appointed by the executive committee.

      • One member nominated by the Calcutta branch.
